April 19, 2021Hi Kornel, I have another question.
Do you have the same portfolio for your RSP and your TFSA?
And do you buy for each monthly and then rebalance each the same way?
By Kornel Szrejber
April 21, 2021Hi Jacqueline. I get this question a lot and so I wrote a pretty large guide/article explaining the different approaches, what I used to do, and what I do now (plus the pros and cons of each). Here is the article for you:
https://www.buildwealthcanada.ca/what-investments-to-hold-in-an-rrsp-vs-tfsa-vs-taxable-account-asset-location/
Also, I link out to it and lots of other frequently asked questions and answers from course students here:
https://www.buildwealthcanada.ca/etf-index-investing-course/16-additional-tips-and-conclusions/
Regarding your other question: When I was in the accumulation stage, yes, I would buy the same ETFs once a month. I would use the rebalancing spreadsheet in the course to determine which of the ETFs were currently underweight. Then I would use that spreadsheet to know how much of each ETF to buy with the new money from the job so that when I was done doing the purchases, I would be balanced once again (or at least very close to being perfectly balanced).
This is a very cost effective approach too because by rebalancing in this way, you don’t really have to sell to rebalance at all. You just top-up the ETFs that are underweight with the new money that you are putting in. In this way, you don’t end up paying any commissions in Questrade because you are buying ETFs (which is free), as opposed to selling ETFs (which they charge the $5 or so commission per trade).
FYI: This stops working as well when we have major declines in the market (like the 30% drop we saw when COVID first hit). But, apart from those rare occurrences, you can usually keep your portfolio in balance by just buying the underweight ETFs.

December 17, 2017Hi Kornel,
Great information from the course, facilitating my leap into a self-directed, index ETF-based portfolio. I’ve been listening to all your podcasts over the last few weeks and found them not only informative, but inspiring. I appreciate all that you have offered thus far and look forward to hearing more from you and your guests.
Sidebar – Found this great short video from Ben Felix at PWL Capital about Canadians’ lack of awareness about ETF’s vs. the US market.

Thanks again!

April 25, 2017Just a bit of useful information regarding Quest Trade and the security of your investment capital..They offer 1 million dollars of security + an additional 9 Million dollars (Lloyds of London) of security on each account, far greater than our Canadian Class A banks.
On a final note, transfer back of needed cash from your Quest Trade account after a trade transaction takings @ 2 business days. Also to avoid a 24.95 quarterly account fee, please keep at least 5000.00 cash or value of securities in your account..This fee does not apply if you make some transactions during this quarter (3 mths), but its best, if possible to keep the 5000.00 value in place to avoid a unforeseen unwelcome surprise.
Thank you Kornel for the course, most of it was second nature to me, but all your extras and added information filled in all the missing cracks I had regarding ETFs. I highly recommend your course to novice or seasoned investors alike…Once more..A BIG THANK YOU!

July 4, 2016Awesome! Thanks for the feedback Tommy!
Hopefully we’ll have a French version in the future too. I just need someone to partner with that can speak fluent French. 🙂
